i have never been to Butlins…

never..my only frame of reference for Butlins up till now was a certain TV series in the 70’s which i believe was supposedly set at a Butlins holiday camp.  I have to confess i was not a massive fan of the show, that sort of slapstick benny hill type humour was always a bit lost on  me. Shame on me as a brit i know…

I have to say, as a kid, they did always look like fun places to go. My parents, though, were more into travelling across France and camping close to beaches and lots of “jollie chateaux” so the chances of my visiting one as a kid was very unlikely.

But recently we got the great news that our family and my blog have been chosen to represent Butlins as Butlins ambassadors this year. So we rather incredibly get to go and have a break and review one of their three sites. When i found out i ordered their brochure and once the children saw the pictures of the pool, the water slides, the games, the shows, cbeebies characters, the hotels, the food…….there were some VERY over-excited kids in our house.

To be honest it couldn’t have come at a better time for us. I blogged a couple of weeks ago about last years attempt at a camping holiday and just how hard that sort of holiday can be with young kids.  Because realistically you would look at the age gap i have from number 1 kid to number 5 and think its not that much. Just under 8 years. Which in the grand scheme of things isnt that much..it didnt ‘feel’ like much time between babies!

But actually having a nearly 10 year old all the way down to a toddler can make holidays at best a bit of a juggling act and at worst a week when you return home with relief and silently wonder to yourself why you bothered. Organising activities, days out, food, sleeps, down time to suit kids with such drastically different needs is a challenge when you are in the comfort and familiarity of your own home. Moving that all into a compact “on holiday” version can add a whole heap more stress on top.

Which is why when looking closer at what Butlins has to offer im starting to get a little inner squeal of excitement going….because it looks like it will be a break that I will get to enjoy as well as the kids! Lets face it when the kids are happy, entertained (by someone else!) and (with my kids anyway), burning off a LOT of energy..it going to be a winner for all of us.

Just look at some of the images i found when i googled ‘activities at Butlins”

No wonder the kids are excited, there is a couple of them i’d like to have a go at!!

So im interested to hear about other people’s Butlins experiences. We are likely to be going next year, plenty of time to work up the excitement. We have yet to choose a location. My son is very keen on the Bognor Regis site, mainly i think due to its hotel that has its own ‘gaming room!” haha.

Ill tell you what i want what i really really want

The Spice girls were back….briefly…yelling..um i mean singing…into the microphones at the Olympic games closing ceremony. Apparently its just a one off reunion. *collective sigh from all humankind*

Anyway the presenter of the games shouted in her enthusiasm “they really are the ultimate in girl power!’ …girl power its one of those catchphrases that we hear over and over again. Its bit like when at school we used to use the word ‘nice’ in a sentence. My english teacher would always roll his eyes and suck in his breath and say ‘nice is not a descriptive word, it means nothing!’ and it got me thinking..Has that term ‘girl power’ just become a term we use now for strong, positive, women or has it become merely a tag line for a bunch of loud, up too high, out too far, women with just a bit too much mouth?

In the weeks preceeding the closing ceremony, throughout the fantastic sporting spectacle that was the Olympic games things like this were popping up all over twitter and facebook:

Jessica Ennis is such a wonderful role model for young girls, none of this TOWIE rubbish, we need more Jessicas! – this comment alone got retweeted over 1000 times!

and:

and i wondered if really the sort of ‘girl power’ that the likes of the spice girls demonstrate and exhibit is really the sort of ‘girl power’ we should be shouting about and laying down as an example for our young women. It seems like there are a LOT of us who think that there is a very different type of woman that we would like to aspire to and more importantly that the new eyes of the young generation should notice above the nonsense, reality TV, be famous because you can puke on the pavement type person.

There didn’t seem to be many tweets  of ‘how inspiring are those fabulous spice girls careering around a stadium on a flashing black cab!’ ‘ from what i can see they are fairly miserable, constantly starving and self obsessed individuals. Looking for the quick and easy way to make money, loose weight, look browner, thinner, younger, cooler….

None of those characteristics i see in the 30 something Olympic rower who despite coming runner up with silver in the last couple of Olympic games, dedicated herself to getting her dream gold and for four years trained to get it.

I can’t imagine that any of those cyclists care for a micro-second what they look like when they are being interviewed after their dream has seen it fruition after so much work. Im thinking in the super hot and humid environment of the velodrome frizzy hair and no make up is probably standard anyhow!!

Their achievement is built on the fundamentals of dedication, committment, hard work, enduring through pain, setbacks, knock downs and holding fast to your dream no matter how far off it might seem, despite there being no ‘get there quick’ option. It is just all down to how much effort you, yourself put into it.. showing up, sticking with it…every.single.day.

In my opinion that is the sort of ‘girl power’ i want my little girls inspired by.

This is my very sadly very late  link up with my friend over at the Wednesday Witter.  Go check out some other ideas of the week.

Finding the gold…

A very appropriate post given the last 14 days at London 2012. Life seems very mediocre when you read what some of the athletes put themselves through to get to that top podium place. But we are not all athletes and we will not all get the chance to win a gold medal. So here is my gold from the past couple of weeks. How about you?
